The CARABINE ECU
Most electronic fuel injection systems on the market today utilize technology that requires a laptop computer, and are too complicated and too expensive. Now HILBORN
introduces an affordable and easy to use ECU as part of their growing line of electronic fuel injection. With the purchase of a complete EFI kit from HILBORN, we will flow test the entire system and pre-set the CARABINE ECU to the correct fuel flow requirements at no additional charge.
How Is It Different?
The CARABINE ECU uses a different technology that lets you tune your engine simply and accurately, without a laptop computer or an electronics expert. It's as easy as tuning a carberator. A small screw-driver is all you need to tune this ECU to fit your engine's fuel requirements. Unlike other ECU's, the CARABINE ECU does not need a MAP sensor or an 0² sensor to calculate fuel flow requirements. Since this information is already known to us, the ECU can be factory pre-set accordingly. Use of an 0² sensor with it's own read-out (not connected to the ECU) may be useful for extremely fine-tuning, but is not a necessary component.
Factory Pre-set
When you receive this ECU as part of a complete EFI kit from HILBORN, you just install it aand it's ready to run. We utilize knowledge gained from over 50 years experience in the field of mechanical fuel injection to pre-set the CARABINE ECU on our flow test stand to match the proper fuel requirements of your engine. You simply supply us with the necessary engine specs and we do the rest. Minor adjustments, with only a screwdriver, are left up to you. In some cases, no tuning will be necessary!
Customizing Saves $$$
With our customized systems, you will not be sold a lot of unnecessary sensors. The basic system requires only a water temperature sensor and a throttle position sensor (both supplied with the EFI kit). Optional sensors may be installed a needed such as a high altitude pressure sensor or an air temperature sensor. We can also add a sensor if your engine is turbocharged. You save money by purchasing only what you need.
Easy Installation
Simplified instructions and detailed wiring diagrams are included in the Installation and Tuning Manual so you can install it yourself, or enlist the help of someone who specializes in this type of work. The ECU wires are color-coded and the diagrams clearly illustrate the proper connection to each electronic component. The ECU can be mounted in any location that has access for tuning away from high heat.
Set-Up & Operation
The CARABINE ECU will operate on any engine from one (1) to eight (8) cylinders. You can run any type of fuel, up to the limit of the injector nozzle capacity. It operates as a batch fire system and can use either high or low impedance injectors (8 cylinder engines must use the high impedance type). For fuel management, the ECU needs only to read the impulses from the ignition system. Either breaker point or electronic ignitions can be used.
Pre-Tuning
Pre-tuning involves only 2 steps that provide necessary information to the ECU.
Spark Count Tuning is easily accomplished by setting the ECU to the correct number of cylinders in your engine. This step is pre-set at our factory.
Throttle Position Sensor Calibration enables the ECU to recognize the open throttle position at all times. This step is clearly explained in the manual.
Tuning
Tuning is accomplished by means of sixteen (16) screws or "potentiometers", however, it is important to remember that the ECU is already factory pre-set for your engine's fuel flow requirements and a flow sheet it provided for your reference. Only slight fine-tuning adjustments with a screwdriver may be needed after installation. When the engine is running, the oly light that appears on the ECU is the one corresponding to the engine rpm range. These lights indicate which screw to turn if you want to tune the engine while the car is being driven.
The following is a description of the tuning process:
Full Throttle Tuning (PC): A vertical line of 8 tuning screws (in 1000 rmp increments) enables you to tune for full throttle fuel flow from 1000 rmp to 8000 rpm. When running at more than 8000 rpm, the ECU automatically calculates the correct fuel quantity using the data from the 1000 to 8000 rpm tunings.
Part Throttle (MC) and Light Throttle (FC) Tuning: These adjustments are accomplished with 4 screws; two for the low rpm (1000) and two for the high rpm (8000). Fuel flows between these two rpms are automatically calculated by the ECU using the data from these two settings and from the TPS.
Idle Speed (RAL), Cold Start (MT), and Accelerations (PR) Tunings: All of these adjustments are controlled by one tuning screw each.
Rev Limiter Tuning Screw (LIM): There is one screw to set the rpm limit from 4000 to 12000 rpm.
